Mepygurus marmonti

Madagascar

جدید

Mepygurus marmonti is an extinct sand dollar from Sakaraha, Madagascar. It dates from the Jurassic.
Modern day sand dollars bury themselves in the sand in shallow waters and feed off the fine organic particles that are mixed in with the sand.
It is possible that these ancient ones had the same feeding patterns. This Mepygurus is particularly well-preserved.
It is slightly pentagonal, with five petals that are clear and distinct.
Concentric growth rings and the 'scars' from the feet on the under surface are also clearly evident.
This sea urchin could be from Madagascar. It looks like Pygurus, Mepygurus or something near these species.
